    Give a little?
[info]bunnymcfoo is trying to raise $200 to help by some nice new underwear for teen-aged girls living in a homeless shelter. She has more details about it here. These poor kids don't have any new clothes, all their clothing is used, including their underwear, so yeah, even a few bucks would help.

    Countdown to Christmas...Day 22
During the champion interviews for the Snarry Games one of the questions we were asked was which characters did we find most challenging to draw. At the time I really hadn't tried to draw any of the other characters besides Snape and Harry, so I pretty much figured the rest were all going to be equally difficult. I was mistaken. Today's character is by far the most difficult one I've had to draw yet. I probably drew over thirty different versions of him, but decided this one most closely matched my vision of the character. I was going to leave him out of the countdown, but in the end, I decided I really had to include him. I'd welcome any concrit.

    Venus in the Moon

    Venus in the Moon
Credit & Copyright: Johannes Schedler (Panther Observatory)
    Inset: Vincent Jacques

Explanation: On December 1, bright planets Venus and Jupiter gathered near the young crescent Moon, an inspiring celestial scene in early evening skies around the world. But from some locations the Moon actually passed in front of Venus, interrupting the tight grouping with a lunar occultation. Captured from Wildon, Austria, this twilight view shows the silvery evening star about five minutes before it slipped behind the dark lunar limb and vanished from sight for more than hour. The image is a combination of long and short exposures showing details of the lunar surface illuminated by both faint earthshine and bright sunlight. In the inset, recorded later in darkened skies over Breil-sur-Roya in southeastern France, a dazzling Venus has reappeared below the bright lunar crescent. Of course, Jupiter, at the upper right about 2 degrees from Venus and Moon, is sporting moons of its own seen as tiny pinpricks of light on either side of the bright planet.

Live Long and Marry Art (and Holiday Cards!)
I got one of the commissions I won in the LiveLongNMarry auction! It's by the wonderful [info]rezokudan, and she bravely attempted Snarry for me! It's called Snowflake:

Here (sorry, link takes you to Live Journal since I don't know how to put up photos here!)

And in the spirit of Snarry,(and a snappy segue) if you'd like a cheesy, schmoopy Snarry holiday card, my sign up post is here.

    December posting
In honor of the holiday season, and the busy schedules it creates, the entire month of December will be a mixed bag prompt. In other words, you can use any and all of the prompts from the previous year (2008, tagged weeks 7 - 47).

Saw a prompt you liked but couldn't write?
Wrote for a prompt but didn't submit it in time?
Inspired by a prompt after the submission deadline?

    That's what December is for!

Just remember to note which prompt you're writing for (either by number or name), for tagging and memory purposes.

We'll return with new prompts starting in January! =)

And remember, if you have a suggestion for this community, to comment on the latest admin post (comments will be screened).

A Happy Sky Over Los Angeles

A Happy Sky Over Los Angeles
Credit & Copyright: Dave Jurasevich (Mt. Wilson Observatory)

Explanation: Sunday, the sky seemed to smile over much of planet Earth. Visible the world over was an unusual superposition of our Moon and the planets Venus and Jupiter. Pictures taken at the right time show a crescent Moon that appears to be a smile when paired with the planetary conjunction of seemingly nearby Jupiter and Venus. Pictured above is the scene as it appeared from Mt. Wilson Observatory overlooking Los Angeles, California, USA after sunset on 2008 November 30. Highest in the sky and farthest in the distance is the planet Jupiter. Significantly closer and visible to Jupiter's lower left is Venus, appearing through Earth's atmospheric clouds as unusually blue. On the far right, above the horizon, is our Moon, in a waxing crescent phase. Thin clouds illuminated by the Moon appear unusually orange. Sprawling across the bottom of the image are the hills of Los Angeles, many covered by a thin haze, while LA skyscrapers are visible on the far left. The conjunction of Venus and Jupiter will continue to be visible toward the west after sunset during much of this month. Hours after the taking of this image, however, the Moon approached the distant duo, briefly eclipsed Venus, and then moved on.

    Countdown to Christmas...Day 23
If you look at my other OTPs to determine my general shipping preferences, then this character really should be the one I ship with Harry. Alas, my love for teh Snarry is too strong. Nearly 30 years of shipping predictability has been destroyed by Snape. ♥♥♥ Still, no idea how Harry can resist this cutie.

    Countdown to Christmas...Day 24
Today's art is a character that I've been asked to draw numerous times. He was actually really fun to do so you may see more of him. Though perhaps not with the person you'd really want to see him with. *is seekritly a Snape/everybody shipper, but especially this character*.

In other news, I haven't really been able to read my flist for the past several days and this will likely be true for another week or so, so if you post something you know I should see, please give me a heads up. *clings to flist*

*goes back to making more @%$*!#& cookies* HoHoHo!!!

International Space Station: Find the Astronaut

International Space Station: Find the Astronaut
    Credit: STS-126 Shuttle Crew, NASA

Explanation: Where's the astronaut? Somewhere in this impressive array of International Space Station (ISS) hardware, astronaut Steve Bowen can be found upgrading and cleaning key parts of Earth's most prominent orbital outpost. Astronaut Bowen and Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper (not pictured), part of the Space Shuttle Endeavour's recently ended STS-126 mission to the ISS, spent nearly three hours on this spacewalk hovering high above planet Earth. Bowen progressed toward achieving a key goal of the mission -- servicing of the Solar Alpha Rotary Joints to better allow some solar arrays to track the Sun. In the lower foreground of the above image is the cylindrical Columbus Laboratory, protruding from the right is an impressively large space station truss, while in the background are some of the expansive solar arrays that collect sunlight to power the ISS. Far in the distance, a blue arc of Earth's thin atmosphere is visible on the horizon. The next space shuttle flight is scheduled for 2009 February, when Discovery will deliver elements to further expand the ISS.

Massive Stars Resolved in the Carina Nebula

Massive Stars Resolved in the Carina Nebula
Credit: NASA, ESA, and J. Maíz Apellániz (Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía, Spain)

Explanation: How massive can stars be? Big, hefty stars live short violent lives that can profoundly affect their environments. Isolating a massive star can be problematic, however, since what seems to be a single bright star might actually turn out to be several stars close together. Such was the case for two of the brightest objects visible in the open star cluster Trumpler 16, located in the southern Carina Nebula. Upon close inspection by the Hubble Space Telescope, WR 25, the brightest object in the above image, was confirmed to consist of at least two separate stars. Additionally, Tr16 -244, just to the upper right of WR 25, was resolved for the first time to be at least three individual stars. Even so, the brightest star in WR 25 appears to be about 50 times the mass of our Sun, making it one of the more massive stars known. Winds from these stars are likely significant contributers to the large bubble that the star cluster sits in. The Carina Nebula, home to unusually shaped dust clouds and the famous variable star Eta Carina, lies about 7,500 light years away toward the constellation of Ship's Keel (Carina).

    Countdown to Christmas...Day 25
I've occasionally been asked to draw various Harry Potter characters other than Snape and Harry and I thought this might be a good opportunity to try out a few characters you wouldn't normally see on this journal. Though there *might* just be a brief appearance from some old favorites further down the count. ;D

    Seen all over the place...
I tired to do the photo mosaic meme, but every single picture I chose--and I made sure to choose ones that weren't protected--came up blank. Every single one. :( So I did this meme instead.

    Chilean Skyscape

    Chilean Skyscape
Credit & Copyright: Yuri Beletsky (ESO)

Explanation: Night skies over Chilean mountain top observatories can be dark and clear, with glorious cosmic vistas. In this recent example, the plane of our Milky Way galaxy stretches parallel to the horizon, the galactic center's star clusters, dark dust clouds, and glowing nebulae hovering in the west. Recorded after sunset, the wedge of light extending upward through the scene is Zodiacal light, sunlight scattered by dust along the solar system's ecliptic plane. A faint meteor was also caught in the view, but approaching a conjunction, brilliant Venus and bright Jupiter dominate the skyscape. A close pairing through this weekend, by Monday, December 1, they will be joined by the young crescent Moon. Look west after sunset and the tight celestial triangle formed by Moon, Venus, and Jupiter, the three brightest beacons in the night, will be a spectacular sight, even from bright-sky urban locations all over the world.

    Hahahahaha...
*Looks at her "No good deed goes unpunished" sign above her desk*

    *ignores*

You know, I had planned to really cut back on the holiday activities this year, but I just couldn't stand being so idle. So I'm doing twice as much but have given myself about half the time to do it in. *glee* I've heard some people work well under pressure, so I'm going to see how that works out for me this season. Today is caramel corn day, so I'll be whipping up about 12 or so batches since each takes one hour to cook with me jumping up every 15 minutes to stir it. In between I will be doing my "Black Friday" holiday shopping on-line and creating some art for the holiday cards I will be sending to those of you who asked for holiday cards this year. As it turns out, most of you *will* be getting my art on the cards since both Cafepress and Zazzle decided to be butt-holes and CANCEL MY ENTIRE ORDER due to "violations of copyright" that included MY OWN ARTWORK as well as art I commissioned and used with the full permission of the artists. Oh, and they waited until *today* to let me know. Not that this is annoying or anything. *stabittystabstab* But that means no magnets this year, though all special seekrit projects are still on-target. Still, I ♥ my magnets. *sobs* If I can work up something else, I will.

Oh, well. If you would like a holiday card with my Snarry art, just go back and fill out the poll here on IJ or here on LJ. If you have previously signed up and have since changed your mind now that you know you're getting one of my Snarry art cards rather than the porn I usually send, it is too late as I already have your addresses. Mwhahahahahaha! Ah, the ol' bait-and-switch tactic is just perfect for "Black Friday." ;D
